Ford Motor Company Helping to Tackle Hunger Relief in U.S.

When one thinks of hunger relief problems, the image that springs to mind might be of starving children on far-away shores, but there are many people that are hungry right here in our own country. Indianapolis Ford dealers are happy to announce that Ford Motor Company is helping fight hunger in New England. The Ford Motor Company Fund is the charitable arm of the worldwide company, and the new hunger relief program in New England is a major commitment that will help feed people in the area.

The New England hunger relief initiative includes $2 million dollars, support vehicles, and more given to 10 different food banks in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont over the next five years. This project is in connection with Feeding America’s outreach in the New England area. Feeding America is the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief organization and is dedicated to eliminating hunger in the United States.

Why New England?

Jim Vella, president of the Ford Motor Company Fund and Community Services said: “More than 12 percent of those living in the New England area lack reliable access to the food and nutrition needed to thrive. As part of our commitment to the communities we serve, we are stepping up our efforts in the fight against hunger.” He made this announcement at an event with local dealers, food bank representatives, and community leaders. Vella then delivered the keys to a Ford Transit van to the Greater Boston Food Bank. The food bank will use the van to deliver food to people in eastern Massachusetts. This is part of a national network of vans that Ford has provided over the last six years in an effort to meet the needs of the hungry in our country. These vans make it possible for food banks to collect grocery and food donations from retails stores, farmers, and manufacturers, so that it can be given to the people who need it.

Locations that will receive help from Ford this year include:

  • Connecticut: Connecticut Food Bank, East Haven; Foodshare, Bloomfield
  • Maine: Good Shepherd Food Bank, Auburn
  • Massachusetts: The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, Hatfield; Worcester County Food Bank Inc., Shrewsbury
  • New Hampshire: New Hampshire Food Bank, Manchester
  • New York: Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, Latham
  • Vermont: Vermont Foodbank, Barre
  • Rhode Island: Rhode Island Community Food Bank, Providence

All across America

This expanded investment in the New England region is part of the Ford Fund’s Operation Better World initiative. Since 2008 the Operation Better World program has allowed the Ford Fund, Ford dealers, and other groups to come together and create a strategic approach to effectively meet community needs. These programs exist in 25 cities and regions in the United States.
