2018 Ford Mustang vs. 2018 Chevrolet Camaro

The Ford Mustang and the Chevrolet Camaro: two incredible luxury vehicles with plenty of sporty appeal. In the newest 2018 models, both vehicles have gone above and beyond for drivers by providing better performance, enhanced comfort, more luxury, and new additional features you’ll love.

Here at Indianapolis Ford, we believe knowledge is power. The more you know about the cars you’re considering, the more likely you’ll make the right choice deciding between both models. Take a look at the similarities and differences between the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro in this short guide.

2018 Ford Mustang

2018 Ford Mustang

The Ford Mustang is a high-performance breed in general; for generations, drivers turned to it when they wanted to maximize speed and power on the road. That tradition continues, but the 2018 Mustang is a bit different than its predecessors. Expect this one to set you back approximately $40,000.

For starters, the 2018 line dropped the naturally aspirated 3.7-liter V6 engine in favor of a smaller 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine. This gives the cars a significantly improved mpg rating, making it a more attractive choice for budget and eco-conscious drivers.

Performance lovers, take heart—there are options for you, too. You have the option to step up to a 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engine if you buy the GT. Sure, you won’t get as much efficiency out of it, but you’ll get that increased power you are looking for. This optional boost gives you access to an incredible 460 HP—more than enough to carve up any road.

Transmissions come in two options (aside from manual and automatic). Pick from a standard six-speed manual transmission for customized control. The newer and more advanced 10-speed automatic transmission doesn’t provide room for as much customization, but it’s fluid. With the 10-speed, you’ll see an improvement in low-speed response and reduced friction losses.

2018 Chevrolet Camaro

We can’t help but take a minute to stop and stare at the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro; like its predecessors, this car is a thing of beauty. At around $30,000, it’s not even really that far off from the average price of a car, making it uniquely accessible in the expensive sports car world.

The 2018 Camaro is all about options. Under the hood is where your options start; choose from a 2.0-liter turbo, a 3.6-liter V6, a 6.2-liter LT1 V8, or max it out with the Supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 V8 instead. Most of these engines are available right across the line, but there are exceptions, so be sure to ask your dealer what your options are before you buy.

Mustang vs Camaro

HP rating scales with engine size, as it normally would; expect the 2.0-liter turbo to give you around 275 HP/250 ft-lb torque. The 3.6-liter V6 boosts that to 335 HP/284 ft-lb torque instead. That’s a significant increase, but the 6.2-liter LT1 V8 is where things really start getting a bit crazy. 455 HP/455 ft-lb of torque will let you careen down the roads and take curves effortlessly with plenty of high-powered juice to drive safely (and fast).

The most powerful engine option is the Supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 V8 with an even 650 HP/650 ft-lb of torque to take you from point A to point B with impressive speed and power.

In terms of horsepower, the Camaro beats the Mustang, but not in much else. Truthfully, the Ford Mustang’s safety features, luxurious interior, adaptive shifting, and optional GT Performance Package let you achieve just as much with a far better driving experience. It just feels more responsive and nicer to drive.
