Why the Ford Mustang GT Is One of the Best Sports Cars You Can Buy

For car lovers, the name “Mustang” symbolizes one of the great brands in the entire history of the automobile. Few cars have penetrated the American cultural memory like the Ford Mustang or can so effectively summon feelings of nostalgic “they don’t make ‘em like they used to” musings.

We have no intention of challenging the Mustang’s place as one of the most beloved cars ever created, but we do have to take exception to the belief that the Mustang represents a bygone era. The truth is, they do make ‘em like they used to, and there’s no better example of this than the 2017 Ford Mustang GT.

So, put away your nostalgia goggles and take a ride with Bloomington Ford as we discuss exactly why the new Mustang GT is not only a worthy successor to the name but one of the best sports cars you can buy, period.

Reinventing a Classic

2017 Ford Mustang GT

The Mustang celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015 and, to celebrate, Ford decided to redesign the model for a whole new generation. While keeping much of what made previous versions of the Mustang great, Ford also made some improvements.

First, the suspension was updated, making the Mustang better able to handle curves and turns. Second, the bulky muscle car frame was toned down. The Mustang is still powerful but has been updated to be leaner, sleeker, and more in line with modern design sensibilities.

The 2017 Mustang keeps the upgraded suspension from the 2015 version, plus some additional refinements that have been made in the meantime. Of particular note is the 2017’s independent rear suspension, designed to minimize body roll and provide a more responsive ride. All in all, the 2017 Mustang GT has nearly 10 times the amount of anti-lift as previous generations, with much better pitch control during acceleration.

Underneath the hood, there’s an impressive 5.0-liter V8 capable of 526 horsepower and 429 lb.-ft. of torque—and that’s just one of the option. Other engine options include a 3.7-liter V6 (300 hp and 280 lb.-ft. of torque), a 2.3-ltr. EcoBoost engine (301 hp and 320 lb.-ft. of torque) on the EcoBoost and EcoBoost Premium models, and a 5.2-ltr. V8 for the Shelby GT350.
