Review: 2017 Ford Explorer

The Ford Explorer is a family-sized, 7-seat crossover vehicle that has been popular with consumers for many years. It’s easy to see why: It combines comfort and style with safety, excellent handling, and fuel efficiency.

Now that the 2017 Ford Explorer is here, we can confidently say that the newest version of this classic vehicle lives up to the standards of its predecessors by continuing the tradition of excellence it has always embodied, while also adding new and very welcome features and amenities.

Safety and Handling

The 2016 Ford Explorer scored incredibly well on safety tests, scoring a perfect five-star overall rating on federal safety tests, which is why the 2017 model sees no major changes to safety features or vehicle construction that might alter the vehicle’s structural integrity. After all, why fix something that’s not broken? The safety ratings for the 2017 models have yet to be released, but we’re confident that the 2017 Ford Explorer will score just as high – if not higher – than its predecessor.

In terms of steering and handling, the 2017 Ford Explorer continues the tradition of previous models with front-wheel and all-wheel-drive that makes it the perfect family SUV. The standard edition for 2017 comes with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine and is rated at 290 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque.

For the XLT and FWD Limited models, things get an upgrade to a turbocharged 2.3-liter turbo inline-4, and 280 hp and 310 lb.-f. Even better are the Platinum and sports models, which come with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6, upgraded in 2016 to 365 hp and 350 lb.-ft. The Platinum and Sport editions have a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6, along with and sport tuning for the Sport version or luxury appointments for the Platinum.

Amenities and Luxury Features

More than just being a safe, powerful, and reliable drive, the 2017 Ford Explorer also has all the amenities and luxury features that discerning drivers have come to expect. In addition to standard features such as power windows and mirrors, cruise control, and steering wheel controls, the standard edition of the 2017 Explorer also boasts cloth upholstery for the interior, a six-speaker sound system with AM/FM/CD stereo, and a 4.2-inch display and Bluetooth connectivity for cellphones and other devices.

Things get even better with the 2017 Explorer XLT, which adds 18-inch wheels, keyless ignition, satellite radio, and 10-way-power driver’s seat to the features mentioned above.

Most impressive is the Limited edition. Of the many features added to this luxury model, the most impressive are 20-inch wheels; heated steering wheels and passengers seats; heated and cooled front row seats; a power-folding third row; a 12-speaker Sony sound system; and interior ambient lighting.

All in all, the 2017 Ford Explorer is a great continuation of a classic legacy. Along with the powerful engine, superior driver and passenger safety, and many luxury amenities, it also boasts a sleek, sporty appearance that lets it fit in on the highway as well as the school parking lot.
